Karen Halemano

Activity Director

Karen Halemano is the Activity Director for The Plaza at Waikiki.  She graduated from Kalani High School and Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon where she received a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in Therapeutic Recreation and English.  She is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS), credentialed through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).

Karen has worked in a variety of settings such as the Rehab Hospital of the Pacific, Hawaii State Hospital, Oahu Community Mental Health Center, Leahi Hospital, and with the Veteran’s Administration, Pacific Island Healthcare System in the Geriatric Rehabilitation and the Medical Foster Home programs before coming to The Plaza.

She is responsible for designing and implementing a well-rounded recreational program that will benefit the physical, psycho-social, cognitive and emotional needs of our residents, with the goal of facilitating optimal involvement in our community life.   Medical transportation and community reintegration outings are also coordinated by the Activity Director.   These activities weave the concept of healthy living into daily life to enhance independence and improve our resident’s quality of life.
